Elisa says: This photo of a coyote with mange … shows resilience and the fact that nature is not always beautiful and charismatic. Many times coyotes will not survive a winter with this affliction, but I have seen this particular coyote survive the (at least) past two winters. Mange afflicts not only coyotes, but the fox population in Colorado as well, so when they beat it, it's a good thing. I'm not even sure this coyote could see very well - she trekked down the road right at me and didn't react to me until she was about 10 yards away. She's pretty rough looking but - she was hunting and surviving. It was a balmy 5 degrees F (-15 C) on this particular day.
