Jason says: This particular image was a unique capture and a moment that was unexpected. I had spent about five hours crouched behind a sage bush on a wildlife lake management area in central Montana waiting for a pair of nesting cranes to make an appearance from the cattails. As the light was fading and there was no sign of the cranes I was getting ready to pack it up for the day when I decided to give it five more minutes. Luckily a few minutes later the cranes appeared quickly joined by a third who was not welcome. Two of the cranes engaged in a very dramatic and aggressive display with feathers flying and talons hitting each other as the last few minutes of light before the sun went down backlit them in this intense encounter. Within seconds it was over with the unwelcome crane departing over the cattails with a sorely bruised ego.
