Spencer says: [This] image of three brown pelicans represents the importance of protecting biodiversity to me. I took this photo at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge in Florida, which was established in 1903 with the express purpose of protecting this species of pelican. In this area of the US, the brown pelicans were threatened by DDT in the 1960s and 70s, and they have been a success story in the years since DDT was banned. There are a huge number of these pelicans now, particularly in Pelican Island, which is something I look forward to each time I visit Florida. Biodiversity is what makes places like this special.
